There are numerous veteran Indian writers who have contributed vastly towards the growth of literature in the country with their impressive writings.

Indian authors over the years have also inspired younger generation of writers to make their own place in today’s contemporary writing world. Indian writers are still doing their best to portray the Indian cultural diversity, people, heritage and societal norms to acquaint western readers with India and its culture.

Below are mentioned some best known Indian writers till date:

Rabrindranath Tagore: Tagore was an 18-century world-renowned novelist, thespian, short story writer, song writer, playwright, poet and musician.

He  just not reshaped Bengali literature with his contribution but also managed to grab attentions internationally for his work. He was the first non European who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993 and received amazing response for “Gitanjali.”

The Guide by R.K. Narayanan: The author best known for his novels “Malgudi Adventures” and “The Guide” (on which a film was also made in 1965).

Narayanan wrote with easy grace and style and not many know the fact that he used to write for two hours every day without miss. The 19-century author’s work was flawless to the extent that it needed no rewritings or rectification.

In 1964 Narayanan was honored by the Indian government for his contributing to literature with Padma Bhushan.

Khushwant Singh: Popular Indian journalist and novelist, Singh is a well known for his lucid remarks, humor, and expressive writing style.

The 96-year-old has won several awards for his writing including Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan in 1974 and 2007 respectively. He has written numerous books and short stories and he also wrote a novel on history of Sikhism.

Salman Rushdie: Rushdie is a well-known figure in literary world today, however that was not the case when he had started as his first novel titled “Grimus” was a flop not just with audiences but with critics as well.

Rushdie grabbed attention with his second novel “Midnight’s children” in 1981. In the same year he won Broker Prize for “Midnight’s Children.” However, he soon courted controversy for his fourth novel “The Satanic Verses” that drew protests from Muslims from across the world.

In 2007 Queen Elizabeth honored him with title “Knight Bachelor” for his contribution to literature.

Arundhati Roy: Arundhati Roy is a social activist who became world-renowned author with her novel “The God of Small Things.” She has won awards like Booker Prize, Sydney Peace Prize and Cultural Freedom Prize for work till date.
